Internal Drainage Board (IDB) Byelaws are local regulations made under the Land Drainage Act 1991 to help manage watercourses and drainage systems within defined districts where there is a special need for drainage management. These Byelaws set out rules governing activities such as altering watercourses, maintaining banks or carrying out works near drainage channels, sluices, and structures. Their purpose is to ensure the efficient operation of the drainage network, reduce flood risk and protect land and property from damage caused by interference or poor maintenance. They apply only within the boundaries of the relevant IDB, covering the watercourses under its control. Breaches may lead to enforcement action or recovery of associated costs.
