The Environment Team works across all Water Management Alliance Boards to ensure that water management is delivered responsibly and sustainably. They provide ecological advice, supporting the maintenance programme and capital projects, making sure activities comply with environmental legislation.
Working closely with engineers, operational teams, statutory bodies and partner organisations, the team promotes biodiversity, delivers conservation initiatives, and helps protect habitats and species. They also oversee environmental monitoring, policy development and audits to ensure compliance with standards such as ISO 14001.
By balancing flood risk management, land drainage and ecological protection, the Environment Team plays a key role in safeguarding both people and the environment.

Our work is guided by Standard Maintenance Operations (SMOs), which set out how routine drainage and watercourse maintenance is carried out in a safe, consistent and environmentally responsible way. Alongside this, we deliver Biodiversity Action Plans (BAPs) that help protect and enhance local wildlife and habitats, ensuring that essential water management is balanced with the conservation of nature.

Species management is an important part of our work, ensuring we nurture, enhance and protect native wildlife, alongside managing the challenges posed by invasive species. Through careful planning, monitoring, and practical action, we ensure that essential water management activities are carried out in ways that support biodiversity, safeguard habitats and promote a healthy balance in our ecosystems.

We’ve adopted a Carbon Management Plan to halve our carbon emissions by 2030. We routinely monitor performance, act on findings, and publish an annual progress report so stakeholders can see how we’re doing.
