The Loughlin’s Marsh Project was delivered as part of the wider Halvergate Marshes Restoration Project. Halvergate is one of the UK’s most important sites for breeding waders and the second largest grazing marsh, where freshwater is vital for both traditional livestock grazing and the rich biodiversity it supports.

This ambitious project was made possible through strong partnerships:

  • National Highways provided funding through its Environment and Well-Being Designated Fund.
  • RSPB donated the land and now manage the site as part of the Berney Marshes and Breydon Water Reserve.
  • The Broads Internal Drainage Board designed and delivered the engineering works and continue to maintain the water control structures alongside the RSPB.

Together, these organisations created a resilient wetland that supports wildlife, sustains local communities, and stands as a lasting tribute to Ralph Loughlin (Warden at RSPB Berney Marshes, April 1989 – November 2015). His dedication to the restoration of Halvergate Marshes was instrumental, and this marshland is named in his memory.

Overview

What We Did

The project transformed water management within this part of the Halvergate Marshes by:

  • Extending the high-level freshwater carrier by three kilometres, bringing vital freshwater deeper into the system.
  • Re-modelling land, creating channels, scrapes, and open water areas at varying depths.
  • Building seven new water control structures and over two kilometres of channels, improving long-term water management.

How We Did It

Using Lidar data, GPS surveys, and 3D modelling, the team shaped the new wetland with precision. All materials needed for the earthworks were sourced from the marsh itself, eliminating the need for material imports and significantly reducing the carbon footprint associated with transportation.

The result is a diverse wetland landscape that supports wildlife, sustains traditional grazing, and strengthens the resilience of the Halvergate marshes for the future.

Benefits

  • New habitats created – 72 acres of wetland, islands, and scrapes now provide breeding and feeding grounds for a wide variety of wading birds such as Redshank, Lapwing, and Common Tern.
  • Biodiversity boosted – more than 62,000 m² of new islands and over 170,000 m² of open scrapes support a thriving wetland ecosystem.
  • Sustainable management – the integration of natural water management solutions, such as the Bosman wind pump, allows us to manage the freshwater levels without the need energy-intensive machinery.
  • Cultural heritage preserved – archaeological finds, including historical stock pens, were protected through sensitive design so they remain intact for future generations.
  • Access and wellbeing enhanced – managed by the RSPB as part of Berney Marshes and Breydon Water Reserve, the site now offers more opportunities for birdwatching, nature exploration, and recreation via the public footpath.
