Natural Flood Management
We have extensive experience in the design and construction of Natural Flood Management (NFM) solutions. Through tailored “Slow the Flow” interventions such as leaky dams, woody debris, and controlled washlands, our projects implement measures that manage surface runoff, reduce peak flows, and protect downstream communities. These projects are planned with long-term monitoring and maintenance in mind, ensuring resilience across both the rural and urban landscape. Beyond reducing flood risk, such measures also deliver wider benefits including habitat creation, improved biodiversity, and enhanced landscape value.
River restoration forms another cornerstone of our approach, providing solutions that improve watercourse function, channel morphology, and ecological health. By re-meandering rivers, reconnecting floodplains, and creating in-channel habitats, we help restore natural dynamics while balancing land use and stakeholder needs. Silt traps, settling ponds, and sustainable desilting programmes further maintain channel efficiency, improve water quality, and reduce maintenance demands. Together, these interventions support Water Framework Directive compliance, strengthen catchment resilience, and deliver long-term operational and ecological benefits.
Our integrated approach is rooted in collaboration, working closely with landowners, local authorities, and environmental partners to deliver NFM at a meaningful, catchment-wide scale. By engaging stakeholders early, we align flood risk reduction with agricultural operations, land management, and ecological priorities, maximising outcomes for both member boards and external partners.
