Construction work has now commenced on the Exeter Drain Improvement Project, with a programme of phased improvements now underway across locations in Spalding to help reduce flood risk and improve the long-term performance of the drainage system.
The project, which began on site in May 2026, is being delivered in a series of carefully planned phases and includes site investigations, vegetation clearance, culvert construction, drainage improvements and open channel upgrades.
The improvement works are taking place along the Exeter Drain corridor between Albert Street, Clay Lake, Halmer Gate, Cley Hall Drive, Maple Grove and surrounding residential areas.
Current works
Clay Lake and Mulberry Way
At Clay Lake, contractors are carrying out improvements to the existing pipe section. Temporary over-pumping equipment is being used to safely divert water and lower water levels while work takes place. Temporary fencing has also been installed around the work areas, including near residential driveways, to ensure the safety of both the public and the workforce.
At Mulberry Way, engineers are lining and extending the existing culvert. Construction access is being taken via Mulberry Way and surrounding roads, with temporary traffic management measures and parking restrictions in place where required. Works include excavation, installation of upgraded drainage structures and the use of specialist construction equipment. Some equipment, including pumps, may operate continuously to maintain water flow throughout the construction period.
Maple Grove and Cley Hall Drive
A major element of the project involves replacing a 300-metre section of culvert between Halmer Gate and Albert Street.
To enable this work, a temporary working corridor has now been established between properties on Cley Hall Drive and Maple Grove, with site access from Halmer Gate and Albert Street. The works included vegetation clearance and temporary fencing.
Minimising disruption
The project team is working closely with residents throughout the construction programme to minimise disruption wherever possible. While some temporary traffic management, parking restrictions, construction noise and site activity are unavoidable, every effort is being made to complete the work safely and efficiently.
Once complete, the Exeter Drain Improvement Project will provide a more resilient drainage network, helping to better manage water flows and reduce flood risk for local communities.
