The Water Management Alliance (WMA) is delighted to celebrate a special occasion for its Chairman, Sam Markillie, who is travelling to London today to receive his MBE in recognition of his outstanding services to flood risk management.
Announced in The King’s Birthday Honours List in June, the award recognises Sam’s remarkable 47 years of service to the Internal Drainage Board (IDB) sector and the wider land drainage industry.
Throughout his career, Sam has represented agricultural, residential and business ratepayers, initially through his involvement with the South Holland IDB and West Norfolk. For more than 20 years, he has served as Chairman of the Water Management Alliance, providing valued leadership and helping to champion the essential role of IDBs in managing water levels and reducing flood risk.
The official honours citation recognises Sam’s services to flood risk management, reflecting his longstanding commitment to the sector and the communities it serves.
Speaking about receiving the honour, Sam expressed his surprise and gratitude at the recognition, highlighting the privilege of representing agricultural, residential and business ratepayers throughout his career.
Everyone at the WMA is incredibly proud to see Sam’s dedication and contribution recognised at a national level. His MBE is a fitting tribute to nearly five decades of commitment to flood risk management and the people who depend on it.
