The Water Management Alliance’s Sustainable Development Team is pleased to promote the Norfolk Rivers Trust septic tank upgrade scheme, delivered in partnership with Our Rivers.
In rural areas across Norfolk, outdated or inefficient septic tanks can contribute to nutrient runoff entering local watercourses. This can negatively affect water quality, increase algal growth and place pressure on sensitive river and wetland ecosystems.
The upgrade scheme helps eligible homeowners replace older systems with modern treatment solutions that significantly reduce pollution entering the environment, supporting healthier rivers and habitats.
The scheme is currently close to fulfilling its 2026 allocation and new sign-ups are not being taken at present. However, further opportunities are expected to open in 2027 — so this is a “watch this space” moment for interested communities.

Together, small changes at household level can deliver meaningful improvements to water quality across Norfolk’s river catchments.
